It is kind of frustrating that the only think I'm really passionate about these days is video games and what makes them special. It makes me wonder if I should have gone into journalism so that I could have even fewer interesting job prospects than I already do but be able to write about this thing that fascinates me in a respectable way. Obviously I am unfit to take part in the actual process of creating such games, but by god's balls do I love to interpret them.

...Someone on [community profile] rpanoncomm asked for recommendations for Mac-compatible games for Steam. I offered some. ...Look, it's 0600 here and I haven't slept; you'll have to forgive me my incoherence. In some ways, I am dreadfully unhealthy.

So there's that. This probably isn't half as useful as I hope it is, but we shall see once I have slept for a few hours.

Moved to Saskatoon today. It's already strange to have a place that I can call my own again instead of the hotel feeling at my parents' house. Quiet, empty. Pleasant.

Took my meds again for the first time in ages, too, since I figured it would be good to be able to focus while moving. I forgot how it makes my thoughts feel more sharp and brusque compared to my more normal meandering way of forming ideas. It's weird to describe, but it's cool that I can switch between the two just by taking a pill. Meandering is terrible for getting things done, but I'm a lot more comfortable with it, I guess.

Of course, I'm sure that I wouldn't be updating this journal now if I hadn't taken it. I tried a few times over the past several weeks, but ended up just rambling on and losing interest, predictably enough.

If anyone's interested in reading my thoughts on
Deaths by Jesse Venbrux and We The Giants by Peter Groeneweg, both flash games available online for our pleasure, I wrote a little bit about them several months ago. I talked about what messages they might be trying to send by their use of a game mechanic they share: self-sacrifice. It's unedited and cuts off abruptly with my quick notes for what more I wanted to say and a few quotes about Deaths, but it's possible that I managed to say something worthwhile before crashing.

I might have another shot at writing this, since I still think it's interesting and I didn't really get very far. I'm not the first to notice that the two games are related*, but as far as I know no one has dissected the pair side by side. I think I'd like to.

*See the "walking on corpses" note above? This short comment by Anna Anthropy points out the common game mechanic, but doesn't touch on the message that accompanies it as I meant to. It's transparent enough that commenting on it seems almost insulting to the reader, but I think that it's easy for gamers and non-gamers alike to forget that metaphor does exist in the realm of games, even if we aren't usually called upon to find it.


Oh, yes, and since Livejournal apparently has the option now of cross-posting comments to Facebook and Twitter, I'd appreciate if no one would do that with anything in my journal (not that I can think of any possible reason to). I don't have any ties with either website, and don't especially want to be linked to either.

I GOT A JOB! :D And it's actually one that I think is kind of cool; I'm a watch and jewelry repairman at Sears. It's probably not quite as glamorous as my mind tells me, but it'll be awesome! :D Of course, now I have to deal with trying to balance two part-times instead of one full-time, but we will see what happens.

Anyway, I'm playing Chrono Trigger for a little while! Part V was here!

Heh, I had to read my little summary to remember exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. )

Problems in the family, so you get another episode of Chrono Trigger!

Part IV was here! Hah, this time there's actually some point to doing that. :B

ANYWAY, we left off last time when I went to 65000000 B.C. for no reason at all. I've got &hearts Robo &hearts and Marle with me. Oh hey, I wonder if I went back to ...uh, the time with Frog, I could get him to join up with me as well! Now that we can take people through time (if only to ditch them at The End of Time while the others wander around), you'd think it'd be possible. But then, it probably requires a story event, and I have no idea where to find him.

...Welp, I'm going to leave it here today, cause I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do now. Frog won't stop sulking to join up with me... Maybe I'll head up to the castle and be all, "OH I SAVED YOUR BRIDGE ALSO FROG IS SULKING IN THE FOREST OR WHATEVER ALSO HE IS SECRETLY CYRUS.

Aaand we're back! So, picking up o at the End of Time or whatever, I head for this glittery thing. The hooded guy tells me that it'll take me to 1999 A.D, the year that the giant FACE WTF appears on the earth and that going there is a good way to shorten my lifespan.
Pff, whatever, man. I'll blaze my own trail! :DD

Adgh I'm tired, though, so I'm going to leave it here. no MASSIVE DRAMA occurred this time around, so you didn't get to hear me griping about anything. Just a few minutes of messing around. :B I only played for a couple hours anyway, so that's why it was short. Part V is heeeeere!

Alright, guys! Because I really am liking this game, part II already!

Part I was here, if you missed it and want to catch it.
Obviously. It was only yesterday, after all! :B I'm going to add a link to Part II at the bottom of Part I, too, just in case for some reason someone (y'know, like me!) wants to go through all of them in a sitting. :B

My first act this time was to go act like a chicken again because I hoped Marle would call me an idiot. She didn't, disappointingly enough.
Oh hey! I went into Gardinia Forest (which looks to have a castle in the centre) to try out the battle system, and I have to say I like it! I've only done one, but there's no irritating YOUR SCREEN IS EXPLODING ADKGHABK thing like in Final Fantasy, just a noise and then everyone hops around into battle positions.
Haha, translation error that'll persist throughout the whole game! Chrono's Level Up!, indeed! )
Aaand that's where I'll leave off for now. I actually have more typed up, but there is no chance anyone'll sit through all of it in one go. So expect more tomorrow! :D

Escapism! (Chrono Trigger; Part I) Apr. 20th, 2008 @ 12:42 am
Okay, you know what? This is ridiculous even for Saskatchewan. SNOW. D: And really bad driving conditions that (probably) resulted in unpleasantness that I really don't want to get in to right now...
So I'll use my usual tactic of escapism and play a new/old video game! :D I deal with stress healthily, shut up.

And, because I want to be [livejournal.com profile] zarla I think it'll be kinda fun and neat to preserve my first impressions of this game, I shall write up my opinions on the game as I go.
So! A brief intro! Chrono Trigger is widely considered to be the best RPG ever made. I bought it almost by accident because I came packaged with an old Final Fantasy game- FFIV, I believe. It was originally released for the SNES, but I own a copy released years later for PS1.
Anyway, I'm starting it up now.
I'm getting better at this LJ-specific HTML! )
